Abstract
The problem of corrosion in aircraft structure has traditionally been considered a simple economic issue. However, in 1995 Hoeppner et al. presented a review of corrosion and fretting related accidents [1]. Their well-documented conclusion that corrosion in aircraft is a safety concern has not swayed the opinion of many who still refuse to accept this position. Independent research in Australia [2] and in Canada [3, 4] strongly supports the need to consider corrosion as a threat to safe operation of ageing aircraft and not just as an economic burden. In response to these concerns, and due to rapidly rising costs of fleet maintenance, research is being performed in a number of organisations include corrosion damage in damage tolerance calculations.
