Abstract

Purpose: The main purpose of this research is to determine the risk sources faced by fig producing farmers, to rank them according to their importance and to analyze their relationships with each other.
Design/methodology/approach: This research is based on data obtained from surveys conducted with 101 fig producers operating in Aydın province. In the research, the existence of risk sources belonging to farmers was explained with the help of factor analysis. Additionally, using the DEMATEL method, risk factors were ranked in order of importance and their interactions with each other were discovered.
Findings: The 9 factors determined in the research are climate, production, market, food safety, business, land, marketing, soil and technical information risks, according to their importance. Climate, market, land and technical information risks significantly affect other risk factors. While climate risk affects all other risks, marketing risk is affected by all risk factors.
Originality/Value: In this research, a comprehensive risk analysis was created for fig producers using a unique method. Thus, a significant contribution has been made to the development of the literature in this field.
Social implications: The results show that fig producers need sustainable production, agricultural insurance and extension services to better manage risk factors.
