Abstract

Navigating from elementary education to higher education and onto employment in the United States charts the typical person with a disability through at least two major sets of disability laws. For the unprepared student, many of the new stops along their path can feel like a foreign land, where the practice of requesting an accommodation and even occasionally the definition of disability itself differs from the stop before. Disability service providers can provide a roadmap for these transitions by helping students to build the skills needed to advocate for themselves.
