Abstract

The sharing economy has become a global socio-economic phenomenon. Increasing numbers of users are joining a broadening variety of sharing platforms. This development not only emphasizes the sharing economy’s growing societal and economic relevance but also drives a transformation of how goods and services are exchanged and how labor markets are organized. In this paper, we navigate the landscape of the sharing economy, as well as the related gig economy, and explore its various facets from a cross-disciplinary perspective. Building on a structured literature overview, we conduct a horizon scanning approach to discuss the current state and future role of the sharing economy ecosystem and identify avenues for future research. Through this, we aim to provide a more nuanced understanding of the issues at hand and derive meaningful insights and implications for policy-making.
