Abstract

Despite the oil price shock and global economic slowdown from COVID-19, hydrocarbons will still be relevant as petrochemicals play a vital role in Arabian gulf economies even when shifting to a low carbon future. Increasing the share of renewable energy generation and electrifying mobility will require governments of the Middle East to develop integrated energy and economic strategies. Preparing for a -post-COVID-19 world should extend beyond the energy transition into thinking towards a ‘Just’ inclusive energy transition framework for the citizens in the region.
