Abstract

The article discusses the health benefits provided by hospital gardens. Research is reviewed indicating that access to a garden reduced healing time and postoperative pain in patients and that alleviating mental and physical stress stimulates the immune system. A checklist is included of factors to be considered in the design of a hospital garden, including the percentage of greenery, well-maintained water features, and moveable seating. It is noted that a successful hospital garden should appeal to patients, hospital employees, children, and the aged. INSET: What Makes a Garden Healing?.
