Abstract

The likelihood that two deuterium atoms in Pd could approach each other close enough to fuse under ambient conditions has been examined by calculating energy costs self-consistently as a function of separation distance, R, using both Hartree-Fock and local density approximations. A minimum in the potential energy curve exists at R ∼ 1.1 Å along the (100) direction, which is larger than the covalent bond length of 0.7 Å in the free molecule. For very short distances, R ≲ 0.2 Å, the interaction between the deuterium atoms is virtually identical to that in free space, thus making conventional fusion unlikely.
