Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study of the undrained strength anisotropy of a soft clay and relates the results to measurements of such anisotropy in other similar clays. The clay involved is a soft sedimentary clay which occurs along the north coast of the Thames estuary in the county of Essex. The clay is believed to have been deposited over the last 10,000 years during the gradual rise of the sea level from its low levels during the last ice age.
