Abstract
My first visit to Little Sparta was an impressive experience; at the time, Finlay was in conflict with the local authorities over a question of taxes. He considered himself at war with the bureaucrats and on the gate of his garden he had appended a large round sign with the warning WAR ZONE. Having announced my visit in a letter mentioning a common friend, I felt confident enough to enter the land of rebellion, and while I was closing the gate behind me, I noticed that it bore an inscription on its inner side.
