Abstract
The capillaries of a gel made from decomposing liquid lithium-ammonia and sodium-ammonia solutions, as the current passing through them becomes larger, arrange themselves in regular groups consisting of an increasing number of capillaries. The group with six capillaries at the corners and one capillary at the centre of a hexagon may be regarded as the structural unit of capillaries since this is the group with the maximum possible number of capillaries. Fröhlich charge density waves of wavelength λ may slide along the capillaries. The magnetic flux Φ which is generated by the maximum current through the structural unit of capillaries and passes between two of its capillaries of length n λ (n = 1, 2, …) can be expressed as Φ α nhc/2e.
