Abstract

Abstract Rubella virus was isolated from the uterine cervix in two of three nonpregnant women 2-6 days after the onset of clinical rubella infection. Viral invasion of cervical secretions was demonstrated when titres of circulating antibodies were high. Thus, local rubella infection may involve the risk of intrauterine rubella infection in early human embryos. The findings indicate the advisability of effective contraception for some time after rubella infection.
