Abstract

The biodiversity found in Latin America is one of the richestin the world, yet its potential as a source of new pharmaceuticalshas not been fully investigated. This paper will explorethe present status of natural products research in 19 LatinAmerican countries. Future research needs will be presentedalong with reports on the ethnobotanical and bioprospectionprojects under way in Latin America. The presentation willbe based on data collected over the last five years and willbe presented within the framework of the Fine PharmaceuticalSubprogram of the Iberoamerican Program of Scienceand Technology for Development (CYTED), a novel internationalcooperation program.
