Abstract

Acute respiratory tract infections are the most common diseases in all individuals, regardless of age or sex. Epidemiological research and community-based studies conducted since the early 20th century have determined the rates of disease and the pathogens involved in such infections. More recently, advances in diagnostic techniques have enabled a more complete identification of the viruses involved in respiratory infections, which has aided in the ability to target specific therapeutic agents to the causative pathogens.
