Abstract

THE PRIMARY purpose of this study was to analyze the answers given to direct questions by four groups of elementary school children and one group of adults, regarding natural phenom ena; to classify their explanations; to determine the method and types of explanations used by these groups when they explain typical natural phenomena, and to compare these findings with the results of previous investigators. The assumption was made that an analysis and classification of explanations would not cor roborate the thesis that there is an age-related stage in children's thinking. No attempt was made to present an interpretation of the work ings of the children's or adult's minds. The na ture of the responses themselves were analyzed to determine how children and adults explain typical phenomena.
