Abstract

The article gives a short overview of the spread of smallpox in the world, as well as the short background of the struggle against this disease in Serbia in the 19th century and during the period of the Yugoslav state founded in 1918, going on to present further the epidemic of smallpox in socialist Yugoslavia in 1972. It was the last outbreak of smallpox in Europe, prior to its eradication in 1980.
