Abstract

This chapter makes the case for the viability of natural logic—an approach to logic in which logical inferences can take place over natural language forms. Ludlow and Živanović argue that Medieval logicians had a handle on a deep insight into natural logic, attempting to simplify classical logic by paying attention to the polarity of natural language forms. They argue that contemporary logical and mathematical tools can revitalize their approach to natural logic. Ludlow and Živanović then show that Medieval logicians also had an insight into a deep connection holding between logical polarity and quantification.
