Abstract
The natural killer (NK) cell activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes was studied in 33 children with asthma and in 51 controls. The NK cell activity was significantly enhanced in the asthmatics. The NK cell activity of asthmatic children during wheezing periods was higher than the NK activity in the asthmatic children without wheezing, but the difference was not statistically significant. It is speculated that the enhanced NK cell activity in asthmatics may be due to the lowered inhibitory activity of the intracellular cyclic AMP system in the mononuclear cells of asthmatic individuals.
