Abstract

India faces extremely high exposure to ecological threats and, therefore, it is important to consider the effects of natural hazards on electoral processes in the country. This case study first provides some background on the institutional and legal context of elections in India. The paper then explores adaptive measures adopted by the Electoral Commission of India to safeguard the electoral process from natural hazards, with examples from state assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha between 2019 and 2022. This case study is part of a collaborative project. Read other case studies from the project's page: The Impact of Natural Hazards on Elections.
