Abstract

This paper reviews the progress towards the application of environmental management to estuaries. Estuaries represent difficult but pressing instances of the management of environmental systems. The reasons for this are outlined with particular emphasis on societal development in estuarine contexts. Progress towards establishing formal structures for estuary management internationally is then reviewed, highlighting those in the USA, the European Union and the UK (especially England). The Severn Estuary provides a detailed case study of the imperatives for, but halting progress towards, such management. Finally, this experience is then linked to some broader debates surrounding environmental and estuary management.
