Abstract

Current knowledge on natural food and nutraceutics is an interesting research topic for the eyes and vision, especially regarding the mechanisms of action, as well as the development of strategies for their use in personalized medicine. Specific components of food are involved in the regulation of signalling pathways related to the main pathophysiological events, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, angiogenesis, or apoptosis, thus directly impacting the course of diseases. The potential interaction of the biologically active food/nutraceutic components with pharmaceutical drugs or its special impact in younger and older adults are taken into consideration to better address the appropriate use of natural food or nutraceutics, to reach the expected effect in each case. In this context, the ocular surface disorders, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and age macular degeneration are revisited in this Special Interest Symposia.
