Abstract

Natural enemies attacking larvae of the red sunflower seed weevil (RSSW), Smicronyx fulvus LeConte, were identified and assessed for host mortality. Nealiolus curculionis (Fitch), Furcifera rufiventris Loew, Thereva candidata Loew, Formica cinera montana Emery, and a fungus, Metarrhizium spp. reduced populations of S. fulvus larvae and pupae in the soil. N. curculionis in the field parasitized 5.4 and 3.1% RSSW larvae in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Ants had predation rates of 4.4 and 4.2%, and therevids had predation rates of 5.1 and 3.1% in 1982 and 1983, respectively. Metarrhizium spp. infected 0.9% RSSW larvae in 1982 and 9.3% in 1983.
