Abstract

AbstractThis is a qualitative investigation to assess the current situation of traditional weaving among the Lao Krang people of Thailand, with an emphasis on the natural dyeing techniques and colors that make Lao Krang fabric unique. Data was gathered from documentary analysis and field research through questionnaires, interviews, and observation. Results show that there is an increased reliance on synthetic dyes in the communities studied. Although the Lao Krang have a rich history of producing naturally dyed woven products, their current processes almost entirely forgo the traditional dyeing methods in favor of more efficient chemical products. There has been a significant impact of this shift on the nature of the Lao Krang identity and the role of women in the community.
