Abstract

The natural convection of a fluid in a cavity with partially thermally active sidewalls of height H/4 with side length of the cavity that varies from 0.02 to 0.05 m and the cavity of side length of 0.05 m with and without a horizontal baffle is investigated experimentally and numerically for the following Rayleigh numbers: 103–105. The results clearly demonstrate that the baffle has a significant effect on heat transfer and flow characteristics of the fluid. The average Nusselt numbers are smaller than the corresponding values in the cavity without the baffle.
