Abstract

Twins are by far the most common form of multiple pregnancy and mean a challenge for doctors due to the high-risk of maternal and fetal complications. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology used to treat infertility, resulting in increased incidence of multiple pregnancy. There are two types of twins: dizygotic twins and monozygotic twins. A twins pregnancy comes with complications, both for the mother (hypertension, gestational diabetes, anemia, preeclampsia, bleeding or even loss of pregnancy) and babies (prematurity, low birth weight, developmental delays, fetal demise to loss). IVF twins have the same risks as spontaneously conceived twins regarding prematurity and low birth weight. There are no significant differences in the development of babies conceived via IVF versus naturally conceived babies.
