Abstract

In this study, natural clay samples from Mecca province have been prepared and characterized using various techniques. The investigated Clay samples can be regarded as multi- metal oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and TiO2), and CaCO3 doped with different elements such as K, Mn, Zr, Zn, V, Cu, Sr, Ag. The photocatalytic activity of clay materials was evaluated for degradation of dye and phenol. The results have shown superior photocatalytic activity of clay materials as compared to pure TiO2. The higher activity of clay materials is related mainly to the composition of the clay particles of various metal oxides acting as heterojunctions with effective charge carrier separation and charge transfer, in addition to high surface area and the suitable band gap. It is concluded that, clay materials can be regarded as green standalone photocatalysts for various environmental and energy applications.
