Abstract
• Incoherence in Duhem's thought is identified if one takes history and philosophy of physics in conjunction. • Gap between theory in progress and natural classification. • Dependence between logical unity and historical continuity required to rescue coherence. • A solution based on progress described as unending process of additions of natural classifications is proposed.
