Abstract

At least seven medals were coined on the theme of march 1658, across the ice, and the main aim of this paper is to briefly discuss the three different Latin devices they carry. In a condensed form these devices mirror very well the ideological interests underlying the Swedish identity and the image of the Swedish King Charles X Gustavus at the time. When contextualizing them with the aid of contemporary Latin panegyrics, one can see that certain themes were common to several types of propaganda. The devices are also good illustrations of the importance of the Latin language and the legacy from classical antiquity in this propaganda. Thus, the march across the frozen ice of the Little Belt and the Great Belt is one of the best known events in Swedish history among the general public and concludes that the propaganda that is meet here was successful. Keywords:Great Belt; Latin language; medals; Swedish King Charles
