Abstract

This research aims to reconstruct the trip of a Japanese intellectual to Manchuria in the early 20th century and to examine the perception of Manchuria gained as a result of the trip by examining Mankan Tokoro Dokoro written by a leading Japanese modern writer Natsume Soseki in 1909. As his trip to Manchuria was conducted under the support and guidance of South Manchuria Railway Co.(Manchul), he traveled mainly to the Manchul business sites and the former sites of the Russo-Japanese War, and had few opportunities to contact locals or experience Chinese culture in person. Natsume Soseki became a propagandist of Manchul, describing Manchuria and Chinese people in a way that imperial Japan wanted to show. He displayed a discriminatory gaze and sense of superiority to the Chinese in his travelogue, and it can be said that his skewed perception was caused by the distorted trip by Manchul.
