Abstract

After the cataclysmic events in Eastern Europe a new NATO strategy was needed to reflect the emerging security environment. It was thought originally that a review of Allied Military Strategy would incorporate a move away from forward defence and a reduced reliance on nuclear weapons. However, the changes in the review in the July 1990 NATO Summit were even more extensive. In a close analysis, the author highlights some key features of the new strategy and looks ahead to its implementation.
