Abstract
NATO’s emergence as an important contributor to international peacekeeping and humanitarian operations is still a relatively new phenomenon. Expectations have been generated that NATO’s political and military strengths, developed over 40 years to ensure the security and to protect the territorial integrity of its members, can now be applied in close cooperation with its partners, other organisations and institutions, and other UN member states in promoting and supporting international peace, order and stability, especially in the European area of interest.
