Abstract

The purpose of this work was to determine whether native grasses fulfil the digestible dry matter (DDM) requirements of breeding cows during the reproductive cycle. Forage intake was predicted by the weighed mean content of crude protein. The daily balance between cow requirements and forage intake, in DDM (g/kg P 0·75 ) was calculated for 12 simulated calving dates (January to December), with calves weaned at 180 days. We postulate that native grasses satisfy the breeding cow DDM annual requirements if the calving date is adequately planned.
