Abstract

ONE-YEAR EXPENDITURES in the United States for alcohol and other drug abuse treatment and prevention services total more than $1.6 billion. That is the figure cited in the annual report (for the 1986 bookkeeping year) of the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors, Inc. This is a not-for-profit organization, located in Washington, DC, whose members are officials designated by the state governors to administer publicly funded alcohol and other drug abuse treatment and prevention systems. Since September 1984, the association has held a contract with the National Institute on Drug Abuse and National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to provide data to the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration.
