Abstract

Nationalism is a relatively modern concept which emerged in the 18th to 19th centuries with arising of the nation-state. In modern times, the nation-state turned into a dominant form of societal organization. We refer here both to doctrines and political movements that maintain that a nation (usually defined in terms of ethnicity or culture) is entitled to a sovereign or at least autonomous political community, embedded in a shared history, culture, religion, customs, and common destiny. Nationalism as such had an exclusive impact over the history. In modern times, since the second half of 19th century, the nation-state became a dominant form of societal organization.
