Abstract
Over two decades have passed since Charles Taylor published his work on the gap between English Canada and Quebec. However, recent statements by political leaders have shown that this gap has not closed, but widened. This article attempts to explore some of the philosophical underpinnings which inform debates in the “Solitudes.” By doing so, I attempt to further explain the historical significance of liberalism and nationalism by using Quebec and English Canada as case studies to show the modern relevance of liberal political theory. While languages obviously play a role, it is just as important to understand metaphorical language in order to help understand and, hopefully, bypass the gap of understanding between these two geographically and politically linked entities.
