Abstract

Prominent among the nationalist movements of this century is that of the Palestinians. Long denied their own state, the Palestinians continue their quest for independence. The state of Israel, in an effort to thwart the creation of a Palestinian state, has consistently sought to divide the Palestinian people along religious lines. This, along with a general misunderstanding of what constitutes a Palestinian means, that Christian Arabs from Palestine are often perceived as not being Palestinian. The focus of this paper is to place Christian Palestinians within the Palestinian nation by identifying common characteristics of language, culture, love of land, and identity; and then to place Christian Palestinians within the nationalist movement through examples of their participation in such activities as press editorship, protest, and even martyrdom during the intifada, and their assumption of leadership roles in nationalist organizations and government.
