Abstract

ABSTRACT: The US Coast Guard National Strike Force (NSF) is a critical national asset comprised of a unique, highly trained cadre of professionals who maintain and rapidly deploy with specialized equipment and incident management skills in support of Federal On-Scene Coordinators (FOSC) and Lead Agency/Incident Commanders. Rapid collection and reporting of real-time, scientifically-based information is important for assisting the FOSC and Unified Command with operational decision-making during oil dispersant operations. The NSF has been using the Turner Design 10-AU Field Fluorometer since the early 1990s. This system is cumbersome compared to new technology, time-consuming to calibrate and has become increasingly costly and difficult to maintain due to its age. This poster describes the collaborative research and development efforts of the NSF, whose goal was to purchase and develop a new customizable submersible in-situ fluorometry system.
