Abstract

The newly constructed Polish National Stadium rests on the piled up debris of the World War II destroyed city of Warsaw. The opportunity to contribute to the design and creation of a new landmark for the capital and the Polish nation on such historical grounds was of course a great honour. The creation of this arena, working in conjunction with designers and companies from Poland, Germany, Italy and Switzerland established a milestone, technically and functionally. The design of this expressive multifunctional arena with a retractable inner roof above the field, suitable even for winter, and the building of an efficient structure with moveable components resulted in various interesting engineering tasks. The complex form-finding process, structural optimisations and the development of special detail solutions, the engineering as well as the support and supervision of the fabrication on-site was a major task for the engineering team. This article gives an insight to the development of solutions in response to the engineering challenges, many of which had not been encountered hitherto.
