Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the National Science Foundation's Manufacturing Engineering Program. The scope of the Program includes processing bulk materials into engineering materials, and processing engineering materials into discrete products. The scope includes research on production runs of any length and on the corresponding types of equipment. Approaches include research to achieve higher versatility of equipment to reduce investment, and on efficient use of unit operations, on invention of new unit operations, and on optimal sequencing of unit operations into production processes. The Program is science based and is mostly applied research. While it has a long-term outlook, many projects are strongly coupled to industrial organizations, and applications of the research results are often prompt.
