Abstract

The Brazilian National Plan for the Control of Foot and Mouth Disease was initiated in 1963. Systematic vaccination of cattle began in 1966 in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The Plan consists of four stages. The first of these, which involves vaccination in 11 States and one Territory, was completed in 1974. Stage II of the Plan which commenced in 1973 will bring further States within the area of FMD control. Some 214 million trivalent doses of vaccine were produced in 1975. Great stress is being laid on the need for effective quality control of vaccines and a Decree of 1976 makes it obligatory for vaccine manufacturers to quality control 100% of their output within a one-year period. This in addition to official control of vaccines by Government authorities.
