Abstract
In the United States, “national parks” are mostly “natural parks,” though there are national historical parks, such as Gettysburg. Fifty-nine national/natural parks are operated by the National Park Service. Americans parks are “national” as well as “natural” parks, established by an act of the US Congress, and so they are created both by nature and by Congress, or perhaps it would be better to say created by nature and designated by Congress. Park interpreters agree with preserving nature for visitors to appreciate, though many will hesitate at going back to “primitive” nature. Parks have many people, about 300 million per year. The most-visited, the Great Smoky Mountains, has had over 9 million visitors in recent years, followed by the Grand Canyon with over 4 million.
