Abstract
tion to the meager but growing literature intended to deepen our understanding of historical and current Indian economic conditions. A reader, however, cannot help but realize the vital gaps in available basic economic data on India. In his presidential address, Some Suggestions for the Improvement of National Income Data in India, V. K. R. V. Rao appropriately draws attention to these gaps and urges the government to direct its efforts to the collection of pertinent economic statistics through well-designed and deliberately undertaken benchmark surveys, followed by annual sample surveys. Since Rao himself has joined the planning commission, it is to be hoped that these suggestions will soon be implemented.
