National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC)

Abstract

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) is the grantmaking arm of the National Archives and Records Administration, supplying financial support for projects that preserve and provide access to historical records of national significance housed in collections across the country. Each year, the NHPRC awards grants, based on its annual appropriations, to state and local government archives, nongovernmental archives, historical documentary editing projects, and other nonprofit organizations. It currently runs 10 grant or subvention programs and one fellow program. Since 1964, the NHPRC has awarded nearly $175 million to some 4400 projects in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and other special jurisdictions. As part of the National Archives, the Commission is chaired by the Archivist of the United States and governed by a 15-person advisory board, unique among Federal agencies since it includes appointees and representatives of all three branches of government�the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary
