Abstract
National planning is looked upon with mistrust in a free market economy. Although arguments for and against it have been offered, several questions such as the actual advantages and disadvantages for the individual firm must still be answered. Because the French economy is basically a market economy, the French planning system has attracted considerable attention. The French plans have gone through continuous evolution since the First Plan was drawn up in 1947, but the broad lines of the system and the planning approach have changed little. There is justification for some sort of systematic long-range national planning being implemented in the United States, and the French experience should therefore be studied by American businessmen.
