Abstract

The National Atlas of Norway is the first official and governmentally financed atlas of the country. The Norwegian Mapping Authority (Statens kartverk) is responsible for the planning, editing, production and marketing, and the preparation of data and manuscripts is carried out at a number of scientific institutions and public service departments. The whole work is supervised by a steering committee, appointed by the Ministry of the Environment. The National Atlas is produced in the form of thematic maps and booklets collected in folders. So far, 170 thematic maps and 16 booklets have been published and a first edition of the Atlas is planned for publication by 1 January 1995. The technical production of the thematic maps is to a great extent based upon EDP techniques.
