Abstract

The creation of a Slovene university in 1919 was primarily the product of national defence tendencies or stemmed from the desire for national emancipation. At the very beginning, the criteria for universal science were being set forth. Efforts for the establishment of a Slovene university date back to the time of Protestantism and the Counter-Reformation; they became more systematic from 1848 onwards, but were constantly opposed by Austrian authorities. Throughout the decades of its operation, the university has justified its creation in the national sense and in the scientifically universal sense, as it is now ranked among the top 400 universities in the world.
