Abstract

Attention has been drawn in recent years to the value of the cytologic examination of nasal secretions in the diagnosis of diseases of the nose and accessory sinuses. Sewall 1 stressed the presence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in chronic sinusitis; Hansel, 2 Kahn and Stout, 3 Johnson and Goldstein 4 and others noted the importance of eosinophils in the diagnosis of nasal allergy. We wish to present the results of a hundred routine examinations of nasal smears taken from patients with acute and chronic rhinitis and sinusitis, and to emphasize the value of cytologic examination to the rhinologist.
