Abstract

The Solar Physics Branch of the newly formed Space Physics Division in the Office of Space Science and Applications of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Headquarters has an ongoing program of Supporting Research and Technology (SR&T) to encourage basic research in solar physics relevant to NASA's flight programs. Grants and contracts are issued to universities, industry, nonprofit institutions, NASA centers, and other government agencies for this purpose. We emphasize that the rationale for funding meritorious, unsolicited research proposals received by NASA is to provide support for its flight missions. The objectives of these space missions are the study of solar phenomena in a comprehensive manner across a variety of solar regimes, starting at the Sun's core, where energy is generated, and extending out through the solar corona , where the solar wind is formed.
