Abstract

All but one of the four Viking spacecraft sent to explore Mars are silent now, but they have left a legacy of hundreds of remarkable photographs of the Red Planet. Some of the best of these photographs are included in a new NASA paperback publication entitled ‘Images of Mars: The Viking Extended Mission.’ Collected by Nancy Evans of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Michael H. Carrof the U.S. Geological Survey, the pictures illustrate the varied landscape of one of the earth's closest planetary neighbors.
