Narrowing Antibiotic Spectrum for Pediatric Community Acquired Pneumonia

Abstract

Each year over 150,000 children are admitted to the hospital for community acquired pneumonia. Previous studies have shown up to 45% of children are treated with 3rdgeneration cephalosporin, although recommendations from the 2011 guidelines are to use Ampicillin as first line therapy. The Pediatric Infectious Disease Society and Infectious Disease Society of America released evidence-based guidelines regarding the treatment of community acquired pneumonia (CAP) in August 2011 regarding both inpatient and outpatient care.
