Abstract

<h3>To the Editor.—</h3> As a recovering physician addict, I don't believe that I can concur with Dr Khantzian's<sup>1</sup>statement that "physicians consistently respond favorably [to supervised treatment and advocacy]," for my experience during four years of recovery has been that physicians are the most stubborn of the stubborn, with relapses and deceptions commonplace. What really moved me to write, however, was the kindness and positive step of referring to the organization, Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Very few national publications even mention NA as a source of experience in recovering from drug addiction. I was fortunate to have been introduced to NA during residential treatment for my addiction over four years ago, and it has been my comfortable home ever since. I did not have a positive drug history for alcohol abuse, found NA full of serious, down-to-earth people, and related forcefully to the experiences that NA brought to bear. Further
